Ear Tunnel Size Guide

Choosing the right ear tunnel size is essential for comfort, security and long-term wear. Aeternum ear tunnels are made for stretched ears and are listed in millimetres, allowing you to choose the size that matches your healed stretch.

Ear tunnel size is measured by the wearable diameter - the internal opening that sits through the lobe. If your ears are stretched to 10mm, you will usually need 10mm tunnels. If you are unsure, measure an existing pair that fits comfortably rather than guessing.

How ear tunnel sizing works

Ear tunnels are usually sized by the diameter of the wearable part of the jewellery. This is the part that passes through the lobe.

The outer face of the tunnel may be larger than the listed size, especially on Mayan flare, beaded or sculptural designs. This is normal. The listed size refers to the stretch size, not the full external width of the piece.

If you already wear ear tunnels comfortably, choose the same size you usually wear. If you are between sizes or newly stretched, wait until your lobes are fully healed before wearing flared jewellery.

Millimetre sizing and international conversions

Aeternum lists ear tunnels in millimetres because this is the clearest and most accurate way to size stretched ear jewellery. For international customers, the chart below shows approximate gauge and inch equivalents.

Gauge sizing is most commonly used at smaller sizes. Beyond 10mm, millimetres are usually the most precise reference, so always order by the millimetre size listed on the product page.

Millimetres (mm) Approx. gauge Approx. inches
4mm 6g 5/32" approx 0.157 inches
6mm 2g 1/4" approx 0.236 inches
8mm 0g 5/16" approx 0.315 inches
10mm 00g 3/8" approx 0.394 inches
12mm -- 1/2" approx 0.472 inches
14mm -- 9/16" approx 0.551 inches
16mm -- 5/8" approx 0.630 inches
18mm -- 11/16" approx 0.709 inches
20mm -- 25/32" approx 0.787 inches
22mm -- 7/8" approx 0.866 inches
24mm -- 15/16" approx 0.945 inches
26mm -- 1 1/32" approx 1.024 inches
28mm -- 1 3/32" approx 1.102 inches
30mm -- 1 3/16" approx 1.181 inches

Please Note: These conversions are approximate and are provided as a guide. Product sizing at Aeternum should always be chosen by the millimetre size shown on the listing.

Choosing the right fit

A well-fitting ear tunnel should feel secure without forcing the jewellery through the lobe. It should sit comfortably, without pressure, pinching or sharp resistance.

Do not force double flare or Mayan flare tunnels into a stretch that is not ready. Flared jewellery needs enough flexibility in the lobe to pass over the flare safely.

If your ears are newly stretched, irritated, swollen or still settling, wait before ordering or wearing precious metal flared tunnels.

Double flare ear tunnels

Double flare ear tunnels have a raised edge on both the front and back of the piece. This helps the tunnel stay in place without an O-ring.

Because the flare is wider than the wearable centre, double flare tunnels are best suited to fully healed stretched ears. They should not be forced into the lobe.

Mayan flare ear tunnels

Mayan flare ear tunnels have a wider, more sculptural face. They are designed to sit with visual weight at the front of the ear.

The wearable size still refers to the part that passes through the lobe, but the outer face will usually be larger. This is part of the form and should be considered when choosing the style.

Single flare ear tunnels

Single flare ear tunnels have one fixed front flare and are usually secured at the back with an O-ring. They can be easier to insert than double flare tunnels and may suit customers who prefer a more adjustable fit.

Material and weight

Precious metal ear tunnels have a different feel from acrylic, silicone or steel jewellery. Sterling silver and gold have weight, structure and permanence.

Heavier or more sculptural designs should be worn in healed lobes and may not be suitable for everyday wear.

If you are unsure

If you are unsure about sizing, do not guess. Measure a pair of tunnels that already fits you well, or contact us before placing an order.

For bespoke pieces, accurate sizing is especially important.
